A Jewish-American academic writing a book on the Nuremberg trials wins a Fulbright Fellowship and, much to the dismay of her family, decides to spend a year researching and teaching in Heidelberg. Once in Germany, given the topic of her research, she does not broadcast her religion. But on a weekend trip to the countryside, she meets a German professor of American literature who figures out that she’s Jewish. Noting that Goebbels, the “ultimate Nazi,” earned his PhD at the same University where she, a Jew, is now teaching, he is overcome with emotion. The heartfelt conversation that follows is profound, unforgettable, and influences her future in surprising ways.
